Helping
Older Adults Work With Their Insurance Companies
In
the aftermath of a disaster event, older adults may find that they
have had damage to their person and/or property.
In
large scale disaster events, the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) will usually set up areas within existing emergency shelters
for citizens to apply for disaster aid. In this type of situation,
there are opportunities for local aging services providers to work
with older adults on their applications and to help them understand
the potential benefits. Outreach is another way to help, especially
for those individuals who may have weathered the disaster in their
own home instead of making use of any shelters that were opened.
In
other cases where the event was not as large scale, older adults
will have to work with their insurance agencies on their own. The
same tips identified for your agency
in working with your agency insurance company, may also work for
individuals.
There
may also be assistance available from the Internal Revenue Service,
and FEMA may offer low interest loans as well as unemployment assistance.
As
an aging services provider, it would be helpful for a staff member
to compile this type of information so that others could make sure
that seniors and caregivers are made aware of what is available
and how to apply for assistance.
