Planning Ahead for After a Disaster

As part of your disaster response plan, you should have information compiled on how to get help after a disaster, should you need it. Resources will change from disaster to disaster. However, if you know where help is likely to originate, you will be better able to access it.

If you plan to go to an emergency shelter, local human services agencies, the Red Cross, local emergency management, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will have staff and/or trained volunteers to help you access whatever resources are available.

The NC Division of Aging and Adult Services will be sending out updated information on resources for seniors to regional Area Agencies on Aging for distribution to local aging services providers.

The media, if you are able to access it, does an excellent job of highlighting available resources as they emerge.

If you plan to stay at home, know how to contact agencies that would have information on resources.

It might also be useful to read our sections on what to do after a storm or disaster - before - an event. Then you will understand what might occur and will be able to plan accordingly.
