What Are Your Options?

There are basically two types of disaster events - those you have advance warning for and those you don't.

If you don't have any prior warning, you will have to weather the disaster event wherever you are. Depending on the type of disaster and the degree of damage sustained, if you have planned ahead of time you should be able to be self-sustained for a five to seven day period. That means you will have water and food to last for that amount of time. You will know how to stay warm safely, be able to attend to minor cuts and sprains, have food and water for your pets, and be able to help your neighbors as needed. If your dwelling sustained damage to the extent that it is not safe for you to stay there, you will know how to locate a shelter and assistance. How? We will teach you what you need to know. It will then be up to you to take responsibility for making the plan work.

If you do have prior warning you have several choices. You can:

  • weather the storm at home
  • go to a public shelter
  • go to a special needs shelter
  • leave the area that the storm will likely hit
  • weather the storm at home and then go to a shelter afterward

We will give you the information to help you understand these choices so that you can make an informed decision that will help to keep you and your family safe.
