from the American Red Cross
and the Department of Homeland Security

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is well known for disaster response. Citizen education and preparedness is part of their disaster response strategy. As a result, the Red Cross has compiled valuable information related to disasters, written for the public. Triangle J has identified areas of particular interest to older adults in our Region and has provided direct links to the American Red Cross website. The topic areas are listed below. Click on the appropriate button for the direct link.

The Red Cross also wants families to be re-united after a disaster event.  They have a separate website to allow individuals to register so that family members can locate them online and know they are safe.

The Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security was developed after the terrorist attacks of September 11. Twenty Nuclear Explosiontwo federal agencies came together under this new department. The Federal Emergency Management Association was one of those agencies. FEMA had been charged with disaster preparedness and assistance for many years. They now work under the Department of Homeland Security to offer education and disaster assistance.

The Department of Homeland Security offers the following information for citizens to help them prepare for a variety of disasters, including terrorism. There are also links for post-disaster assistance.  They have organized a nationwide "Be Ready" program and have a website working to make disaster assistance information easier to find, cut the “red tape” for citizens to apply for disaster assistance, and eliminate redundant agency processes.
