In
order to understand about disaster planning, it is important to
understand what a disaster is. For our purposes, a disaster is any
event that has the potential to displace and/or harm citizens. A
disaster may occur due to natural causes or it may be caused by
an accident or act of terrorism.
In
this section, we want to give you information to help you and your
family prepare for a disaster situation so that you will have the
best chance to stay safe. If you are a family caregiver, there are
some special considerations that you need to be aware of to ensure
the safety and well-being of your family.

The National Weather Service
provides online information about the weather conditions nationwide,
including alerts and warnings. If a storm is approaching, keep up
with the forecast.
North
Carolina has a storm center to keep citizens informed. You can get
a forecast by city or zip code and see local radar and satellite
images. Plus, there is a wealth of storm information and contact
information.

Currently,
the government is urging citizens to take personal responsibility
for preparing for a bird flu pandemic. To help citizens prepare,
a government website just for information about bird flu has been
