Medical Issues Related to Health & Wellness

The first consideration is getting evaluated periodically by your physician. As people age, it is important that various screenings be done and that risk factors for disease be discussed.

Getting Weight Checked

If you do not feel that you can afford an annual physical, contact your local Health Department to find out what free or low cost clinics may be available. This applies to dental health as well.

It is also important that, should you need prescription drugs, they be taken as prescribed. If you are having difficulty paying for prescription drugs, there is some help available.

If you do have a medical condition, it is important that you continue to have the condition monitored by a health care professional as needed. And, understanding the condition is always helpful. Our caregiver website, Full Circle of Care, offers links to a variety of websites dealing with different diseases and conditions.

Do You Know the Signs of a Stroke?
If more people were able to identify the signs of stroke, medical assistance could be given more quickly. This could prevent some of the debilitating after effects of a stroke and could save a life. Do you know what the signs are?

Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

  • Ask the individual to smile.

  • Ask him or her to raise both arms.

  • Ask the person to speak in a simple sentence.
The sentence must be coherent and complete. An example of a complete sentence is "It is sunny out today."

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Is There a Prevention for Alzheimer's Disease?
As hard as it was to watch President Reagan as his Alzheimer's Disease progressed, it was helpful in that it brought this debilitating disease into our homes and hearts. Many more people are now aware of the disease. And, researchers are still at work trying to find out an exact cause and a cure.

Their work has identified a few things that everyone should know.

Inflammation may impact the disease.
Anti-inflammatory drugs may help prevent it.
