Medical Issues Related to Health & Wellness

The first consideration is getting evaluated periodically by your physician. As people age, it is important that various screenings be done and that risk factors for disease be discussed.

Woman Seeing Doctor

If you do not feel that you can afford an annual physical, contact your local Health Department to find out what free or low cost clinics may be available. This applies to dental health as well.

It is also important that, should you need prescription drugs, they be taken as prescribed. If you are having difficulty paying for prescription drugs, there is some help available.

And, understanding the condition is always helpful. Our caregiver website, Full Circle of Care, offers links to a variety of websites dealing with different diseases and conditions.

Do You Know the Signs of a Stroke?

If more people were able to identify the signs of stroke, medical assistance could be given more quickly. This could prevent some of the debilitating after effects of a stroke and could save a life. Do you know what the signs are?

Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S
Ask the individual to smile.
T
Ask the person to speak in a simple sentence (talk) .
The sentence must be coherent and complete. An example of a complete sentence is "It is sunny out today."
R
Ask him or her to raise both arms.

Another indicator of stroke:
Ask the person to stick out his tongue. If the tongue is crooked, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
