Volunteering is a wonderful way to renew your spirit and give to the community. There are many opportunities to volunteer. Think about what you like to do and areas in which you have expertise. Then contact local agencies that do work in those areas. Ask them if they have volunteer opportunities or present your own ideas. Another option is to contact your local volunteer clearinghouse(s).

Volunteers are always needed in a variety of areas.
"Triangle Impact connects residents of the Triangle to rewarding volunteer opportunities with community agencies throughout the region. By developing and coordinating projects that are scheduled on nights and weekends and can be completed in just a few hours, we make meaningful community involvement possible for even the busiest individual.
We believe everyone has time to care. That's why we focus on short-term, hands on projects that make volunteering accessible, guilt-free and fun. Through Triangle Impact, individuals have the flexibility to volunteer on their own terms, while partnering agencies can always depend on a corps of dedicated volunteers.
Triangle Impact is proud to be an affiliate of Hands On Network, a national organization committed to making volunteering possible for everyone."
It is important to channel volunteers through organized volunteer organizations. Some volunteers want to only volunteer during disaster events. For those volunteers, Community Emergency Response Teams would be a good choice. Through this program, the volunteers are trained in appropriate disaster response for disasters events their area would be more likely to encounter.
Citizen Corps was created to help coordinate volunteer activities that will make communities safer and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation.
HelpinDisaster.org is a website designed to "register and affiliate volunteers prior to a disaster so that organizations within the disaster area can outreach to volunteers by their skills and availability and invite them to assist in the recovery effort." They are especially interested in registering volunteers with specific skills which can then be cross-referenced with the needs of local communities that have been impacted by a disaster.

They are part of 1-800-Volunteer.org which is a national database of volunteer opportunities powered by a volunteer management system for non-profits. In other words, they match volunteers to opportunities within non-profit agencies.
